Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot has taken exception to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s barb about repercussion of the Opposition’s stance against the Women’s Reservation Constitution Amendment Bill on Friday and dared the latter to dissolve the Lok Sabha and seek fresh mandate on this issue.

In a post on social media handle Saturday night, Gehlot gave a strong reaction to an assertion in PM’s address to the nation last night.

The three-time ex-CM retorted, “If PM Modi really believes that women of the country would strongly retaliate and teach a lesson to the Opposition parties including the Congress, he should dissolve the Lok Sabha on this issue and hold mid term polls to seek a fresh mandate”.

Such assertion by the Prime Minister amidst the assembly polls in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu amounts to violation of the model code of conduct (MCC), he contended.

However, the Election Commission of India (ECI) was acting as a ruling BJP’s election department, hence would take no action, Gehlot said sarcastically.

The attempt to resort to exercise of delimitation on the basis of Census 2011 instead of the 2026 caste-based census was an act akin to robbing the women of OBCs class of their rights, he said. Only after the caste census 2026, the population of the OBCs could define the reservation quota for OBCs women.
